Standard ethical training often focuses strictly on risk management, leaving providers ill-equipped when professional codes clash with the cultural realities of their clients. This interactive 3-hour training moves beyond “what to do when you have a dilemma” by examining ethics as a proactive, culturally grounded practice.
Drawing from current literature on transcultural ethical decision-making, this session will assist providers in deconstructing standard Western ethical assumptions (e.g. rigid boundaries, hyper-individualism) and evaluating how these assumptions can inadvertently harm Latine clients. Participants will explore common ethical friction points—such as dual relationships and confidentiality—through the lens of core Latine values like personalismo, familismo, and respeto. Finally, attendees will learn and apply a structured, transcultural decision-making matrix to complex case scenarios, ensuring their ethical choices are both professionally sound and culturally affirming.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Deconstruct Western ethical assumptions embedded in the core ethical principles (the “Big Four”) and identify how they can inadvertently harm Latine clients.
- Evaluate common ethical dilemmas (such as boundaries, dual relationships, and confidentiality) using a culturally responsive, epistemic justice lens to accurately differentiate between ethical violations and cultural self-preservation.
- Apply a structured, culturally inclusive ethical decision-making model to complex clinical scenarios, integrating Latine values (personalismo, familismo, respeto) into everyday choices.

Presenter Bio:
Dr. Priscila Llamosa is a clinical social worker, supervisor, author, and speaker. She serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor and CEO of the Center for Clinical Development and Supervision (CCDS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality, accessible, inclusive, and culturally responsive supervision and specialized clinical education for mental health practitioners. She is also the Clinical Director at Thrivemind Counseling and Wellness, a holistic mental health clinic in Eastern North Carolina. Dr. Llamosa is the author of multiple peer-reviewed publications and an open-access book, and she is a sought-after speaker and workshop facilitator.
Dr. Llamosa is a mixed-ethnicity, Latine, cisgender woman whose clinical practice and supervision frameworks are grounded in social justice, decolonizing, and anti-oppressive approaches. She holds a Doctor of Social Work from the University of Kentucky and a Master of Social Work and graduate certificate in Military and Trauma Counseling from East Carolina University, where she received the Maria McMahon Achievement Award from the School of Social Work in 2015. She is also a 2022 Open Pedagogy Faculty Fellow at the University of North Carolina Wilmington and a former Vice President of the NASW-NC Board of Directors.
