About Course

Welcome to the Building Culturally Responsive Practices In Latine Mental Health self-directed course! By the end of this course, you will have explored and developed your culturally responsive practices in Latine mental health and will be equipped to take this work forward in your daily life. Special focus will be given throughout the course to improving awareness, knowledge, and skills in culturally responsive practices.

Our mission is to build a workforce capable of delivering best practices in mental health to the Latine community. Concurrently, we also hope to build networks of professionals who are passionate about serving this community and supporting one another.

Learning Modules & Steps

There are four learning modules within this course:

  • Module 1: Integrating Cultural Principles into Treatment
  • Module 2: Cultural Humility
  • Module 3: Contextual Interviewing
  • Module 4: Culturally Responsive Therapy Approaches

Within each of these modules, there are three steps:

  • Step 1: A reading assignment to help you think about the topic 
  • Step 2: A pre-recorded presentation to watch on the topic
  • Step 3: Reflection questions to help you think about implementing ideas from the reading and presentation

This course also includes brief introduction and closing sessions. At the end of the course, if you would like to receive Continuing Education credit, you will complete a short assessment to demonstrate what you learned.

Continuing Education

El Futuro has been approved by NBCC for NBCC credit. Sessions approved for NBCC credit are clearly identified. El Futuro is solely responsible for all aspects of the program. NBCC Approval No. 6947.

For eligible participants seeking Continuing Education credit, this self-directed course will provide 10.5 NBCC Credit Hours.

Integrating Cultural Principles into Treatment
By the end of this module, participants should be able to: 1. Describe three clinical considerations important for work with the Latine community. 2. Discuss three cultural values that impact Latine families and how these values influence treatment. 3. Explain how immigration and acculturation impact family dynamics and individual adaptation.

Cultural Humility
By the end of this module, participants should be able to: 1. Define cultural humility and its related terms. 2. Identify actions to take in clinical practice to be more culturally humble. 3. Describe the challenges that get in the way of practicing cultural humility.

Contextual Interviewing
By the end of this module, participants should be able to: 1. Describe the core components of a contextual interview. 2. Use questions and techniques to assess clients' values and tie assessment/treatment to them. 3. Describe how to conduct assessments and interventions in both culturally sensitive and efficient ways.

Culturally Responsive Therapy Approaches
By the end of this module, participants should be able to: 1. Understand how prominent Latine cultural values/outlooks can impact mental health treatment approaches. 2. Explain how to apply different culturally and racially responsive models in a nuanced manner. 3. Develop awareness of how a clinician's own race and biases may impact therapy with Latine individuals.
